The Marangu Route, often referred to as the "Coca-Cola Route," is the oldest and most established trail on Mount Kilimanjaro. It is the only route that offers accommodation in mountain huts rather than tents, making it an excellent choice for trekkers seeking additional comfort during their climb.
This 5-day adventure takes you through lush rainforest, heath and moorland, alpine desert, and finally to the snow-capped summit of Uhuru Peak (5,895m). With experienced mountain guides, porters, and a well-planned itinerary, climbers can enjoy a safe and rewarding journey to the Roof of Africa.
Duration: 5 Days / 4 Nights
Route: Marangu Route
Difficulty: Moderate to Challenging
Summit Height: 5,895m (Uhuru Peak)
Best Time to Climb: January–March and June–October
Follow the safari path from Day 1 departure through all national parks to the final destination.
Distance: 8 km
Hiking Time: 4–5 Hours
Habitat: Rainforest
After breakfast, you will be transferred from your hotel to Marangu Gate, the main entrance to Mount Kilimanjaro National Park. Upon arrival, your guide will assist with registration formalities and provide a final briefing about the trek.
The adventure begins through the dense tropical rainforest on a well-maintained trail. This section is rich in wildlife and vegetation, offering opportunities to spot black-and-white colobus monkeys, blue monkeys, and a variety of bird species. The lush forest canopy provides shade and creates a pleasant trekking environment.
You will stop along the trail for a packed lunch before continuing toward Mandara Hut. Upon arrival, you can relax and enjoy the beautiful surroundings. An optional short walk to Maundi Crater offers spectacular views of northern Tanzania and, on clear days, neighboring Kenya.
Distance: 12 km
Hiking Time: 6–7 Hours
Habitat: Moorland
After an early breakfast, the trek continues as you leave the rainforest behind and enter the heath and moorland zone. The landscape gradually changes, revealing giant lobelias, giant groundsels, and breathtaking panoramic views of Kilimanjaro’s twin peaks, Kibo and Mawenzi.
The trail steadily ascends through open terrain, allowing trekkers to appreciate the vastness of the mountain and surrounding landscapes. Along the way, your guide will explain the unique flora and geology of the mountain.
A picnic lunch is served en route before continuing to Horombo Hut. Upon arrival, you will have time to rest and acclimatize. The area around Horombo offers excellent viewpoints and opportunities for short acclimatization walks.
Distance: 10 km
Hiking Time: 5–6 Hours
Habitat: Alpine Desert
Following breakfast, you depart Horombo Hut and continue into the alpine desert zone. Vegetation becomes increasingly sparse as the landscape transforms into a rugged, rocky environment shaped by volcanic activity.
The route crosses the famous Saddle, a broad, barren plateau stretching between Mawenzi Peak and Kibo Peak. This dramatic landscape offers incredible photographic opportunities and a sense of the mountain’s immense scale.
Upon reaching Kibo Hut, the final base camp before the summit, you will receive a detailed briefing regarding the summit ascent. An early dinner is served, followed by several hours of rest to prepare for the midnight climb.
Distance: 22 km
Hiking Time: 10–14 Hours
Habitat: Arctic Summit Zone & Moorland
Shortly before midnight, you will wake up for tea and light refreshments before beginning the most challenging and rewarding stage of the trek.
Using headlamps, the ascent starts in darkness as you climb steep scree slopes toward Gilman's Point (5,685m) on the crater rim. From here, the trail continues along the rim to Stella Point and ultimately to Uhuru Peak (5,895m), the highest point in Africa.
Arriving at the summit around sunrise is a truly unforgettable experience. You will witness breathtaking views over glaciers, volcanic landscapes, and the African plains far below. After celebrating and taking photographs at the summit sign, you begin the descent back to Kibo Hut for a short rest and brunch.
The journey continues downhill to Horombo Hut, where a well-deserved dinner and overnight stay await.
Distance: 20 km
Hiking Time: 5–7 Hours
Habitat: Moorland & Rainforest
After breakfast, you begin the final descent through moorland and rainforest zones toward Marangu Gate. The trail offers a final opportunity to enjoy the mountain’s diverse ecosystems and stunning scenery.
Upon arrival at the gate, climbers who successfully reached the summit will receive official Kilimanjaro National Park summit certificates. Your trekking team will celebrate your achievement before you are transferred back to your hotel.
