What Should You Pack for a Tanzania Safari?
Packing for a safari can be tricky, especially with strict luggage weight limits on light aircraft flights. The golden rule of safari packing is: keep it casual, comfortable, and neutral. Here is the ultimate packing checklist from the experts at Asoupe Travel.
1. Clothing (The Layering Principle)
Mornings in the Serengeti can be freezing, while afternoons are blistering hot. Layering is key.
- Neutral Colors: Stick to khaki, green, brown, and beige. Avoid dark blue and black (they attract Tsetse flies) and bright colors like red or neon.
- Fleece Jacket or Warm Sweater: Essential for early morning game drives.
- Long-Sleeved Shirts and Trousers: Protects against the sun and evening mosquitoes.
- Comfortable Shoes: Lightweight sneakers or trail shoes. Heavy hiking boots are only needed if you are climbing Kilimanjaro!
2. Safari Gear & Electronics
- Binoculars: Do not share one pair between a family! Having your own 8x40 or 10x42 binoculars is crucial for spotting distant leopards.
- Camera with a Zoom Lens: A smartphone won’t do justice to a lion 50 meters away. Bring a DSLR or mirrorless camera with at least a 300mm lens.
- Power Bank & Universal Adapter: While our luxury lodges have power, a power bank is great for charging devices while in the Land Cruiser all day.
3. Health & Essentials
- High SPF Sunscreen & Wide-Brimmed Hat: The African sun is unforgiving, especially near the equator.
- Insect Repellent: Look for one containing DEET.
- Medication: Bring your prescribed anti-malarial pills, basic painkillers, and stomach medication.
